Wooster Scores Game-Winner Against Melrose

Soccer senior captain knocks in game-winning goal in 76th minute. Girls' soccer wins, goes 10-0-1.

Zach Wooster deflected in a corner from Daniel Masciari with four minutes remaining, as the Belmont High boys' soccer team defeated Melrose 2-1 Tuesday at Harris Field.

Wooster, a senior captain, charged in from the 18-yard line, jumped and hit the ball with his back to score the game-winning goal off a near-perfect feed from Masciari, also a senior captain.

"I was yelling it all game, 'Use your bodies'," a hoarse Belmont coach Peter Guellnitz said from a wet Harris Field.

"It was slippery out here, and we kept trying to swing at the ball, and we'd miss. It was good to see someone finally run through the ball and hit it," he said.

Belmont striker Edgar Damatian drew the corner by hitting a cross off a Melrose defender.

Seniors standout

Damatian, a senior, also scored Belmont's first goal about halfway through the first half to give the Marauders an early 1-0 lead. He put home a cross off a set piece from junior sweeper Paul Connor in the 23rd minute.

Melrose sweeper Luke Patti scored the equalizer five minutes into the second half. He took a set piece just outside the 18-yard line and then scored off the rebound, curving the ball inside the near post.

Melrose had another free kick just outside the 18-yard line halfway through the second half. This time, Melrose defender Ben Mack looped a hard shot around the wall, but Belmont goalie Ben Meyer came up with the clutch save.

Meyer, a senior, was filling in for Jeremy Lockett, who was out due to injury.

"He was outstanding," Guellnitz said.

In addition to Wooster and Connor, Bobby Abdolmohammadi and James Cameron played well in defense.

The game got much more intense and physical in the second half, as Belmont (5-2-3) and Melrose (3-3-3) were side-by-side in the Middlesex League standings coming in. Belmont had lost to Melrose 3-1 earlier this season.

The Marauders return to action against Woburn at 6 p.m., Thursday, at Harris Field.
