Beverly Fish Market Closes After 6 Decades

BEVERLY, MA — A Beverly fish market that was among the go-to spots for fresh seafood on the North Shore for more than 60 years has closed.

Rowand Fisheries Inc. posted a message on its Facebook page Sunday that it will not reopen at its Cabot Street location.

"We have closed our doors for good," the message said. "Thank you for all your patronage over six decades."

The message drew an outpouring of disappointment and well-wishes with more than 400 reactions and comments.

A message on Monday said any outstanding gift certificates will be honored at CaliBasil Vietnamese Eatery on Dodge Street.

While the original message did not give a reason for the closing, Adam Rowand — the owner's son and a previous manager — responded to the string of comments on Facebook.

"There were a lot of reasons it closed. but rising cost of products, less and less customers coming in each day, and so on," Rowand posted. "We gave it our best shot and it just wasn't enough to keep going."

The fish market opened in 1959 and prided itself in serving a great selection of "fresh local fish caught on the daily."
