Brendan Sweeney Responds to Dr. Ferreira’s Assessment of His Candidacy
Sweeney, an at-large city councilor and candidate for Mayor, responds to "Reflections on My Meeting with Mayoral Candidate" letter

In response to Dr. Ferreira’s post about my candidacy for Mayor of Beverly, I want to emphasize that I am deeply committed to ensuring the continued success and improvement of the Beverly Public Schools. My wife taught third grade for six years, and she now works as a school administrator; I know firsthand the important work that our educators do in teaching the next generation.
First and foremost, I am focused on fostering collaboration between the Mayor's office, educators, school administration, parents, and the broader community. I believe that strong communication and cooperation are key to addressing the challenges facing the Beverly Public Schools and ensuring that students succeed. Currently, this level of communication from the Mayor’s office has been lacking, and I plan to correct this if I am elected Mayor. Additionally, I have a proven track record of supporting the Beverly Public Schools, having voted in favor of budgets that invested in the schools during my time on the City Council.
However, I am also acutely aware of the financial constraints facing Beverly, particularly with regards to Proposition 2 1/2 and limited state funding for education. Because of this, I am cautious about making promises of large increases in school funding; however, I am committed to working with state leaders to secure more support for Beverly's public schools, particularly in the areas of special education, educator salaries, and general behavioral support. Without additional funding from the state, we won't be able to make the necessary investments in the Beverly Public Schools. A major reason we're in this challenging situation is that the state funding Beverly receives as a "minimum aid community" has not kept pace with the rising costs of public education.

I am fully committed to the Beverly Public Schools and support efforts to reduce class sizes and enhance necessary student behavioral support. Given the limited state funding and constrained local revenues, we must take a comprehensive look at how the Beverly Public Schools operate to identify opportunities for streamlining administrative functions (without cutting classroom teachers) in order to reduce inefficiencies and redirect vital resources to educators and the essential services they provide. Beverly’s current financial situation demands a balanced approach to funding that considers the city’s revenue limitations while still prioritizing the educational needs of our students. By fostering collaboration, thoughtful planning, and a focus on long-term sustainability, I am dedicated to ensuring that Beverly’s public education system continues to thrive for future generations.
