Amazon, Buffett, JP Morgan To Base Healthcare Company In Boston

The CEO of the new healthcare company will be best selling author and Surgeon Atul Gawande of Newton.

BOSTON, MA – Boston is about to get a new healthcare company formed by a powerhouse that includes Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, billionaire investor Warren Buffett and JP Morgan’s Jamie Dimon in an effort to deliver healthcare that checks rising costs.

The three companies announced in January that they were looking to jump into the healthcare business, but little was known about just how that long-term campaign would look.

The group tapped the famous doctor and author Atul Gawande who owns a home in Newton to be the company’s CEO, effective next month. Gawande is a surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine and wrote several New York Times best selling books, including "Being Mortal."

Gawande who has devoted his career to working on building scalable solutions for better more affordable healthcare said he planned to use the appointment to create a better healthcare system in a statement.

"The system is broken, and better is possible," he said. “Now I have the backing of these remarkable organizations to pursue this mission with even greater impact for more than a million people, and in doing so incubate better models of care for all. This work will take time but must be done.”

JPMorgan Chase CEO and Chairman Jamie Dimon said leaders such as the owners of the three sizable companies had a responsibility to address healthcare.

“Together, we have the talent and resources to make things better, and it is our responsibility to do so,” said Dimon.
