9-day MBTA Green Line Closure Coming Soon

This most recent shutdown could throw a wrench in many people's commutes.

BOSTON, MA — Green Line service on portions of all four branches will be suspended for nine days as the MBTA completes another round of signal upgrades in the subway's central tunnel.

The closure is scheduled to begin Saturday, Sept. 26, and continue through Sunday, Oct. 4. During that time, Green Line service will be suspended between Government Center and Babcock Street on the B Branch, Government Center and Kenmore on the C Branch, North Station and Kenmore on the D Branch, and North Station and Heath Street on the E Branch. Trains will continue operating outside the closure areas.

According to the MBTA, free and accessible shuttle buses will replace service along portions of the affected routes. B Branch riders can use shuttle buses between Babcock Street and Back Bay, while riders traveling downtown can connect to the Orange Line at Back Bay. Riders are also encouraged to consider alternative service during the shutdown, including regular MBTA bus routes and the Commuter Rail. The closure will allow crews to perform critical signal upgrades in the central Green Line tunnel as part of ongoing efforts to improve reliability across the system. Riders should plan for additional travel time and check the MBTA's Trip Planner before traveling.

This closure comes less than two months after portions of all four Green Line branches were closed for nine days in August for similar work. During that closure, service was suspended between Government Center and Babcock Street on the B Branch, Government Center and Cleveland Circle on the C Branch, North Station and Kenmore on the D Branch, and North Station and Heath Street on the E Branch. The MBTA used the shutdown to complete signal upgrades in the central tunnel as part of its ongoing Track Improvement Program.

Another round of Green Line service suspensions is scheduled for Oct. 31 through Nov. 1.
