BOSTON, MA — Red Sox lefty pitcher Chris Sale will miss the rest of the 2022 season after fracturing his wrist over the weekend.

The Red Sox said Tuesday Sale, 33, was biking on Saturday when he fell and injured himself. He underwent surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital on Monday to repair the fracture, the team said.

"He will miss the remainder of the 2022 season but is expected to be ready for the start of spring training in 2023," the Red Sox said in a tweet.

The wrist surgery was Sale's second surgery in recent weeks. He had surgery in July to repair a pinky finger damaged by a line drive.

Sale had suffered a stress fracture in his rib cage earlier this season. He made several starts with the Worcester Red Sox while he rehabbed from the injury. Sale has only pitched about 5 innings in the 2022 season going 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA.
