Boston Red Sox Select Kyle Teel, Nazzan Zanetello On MLB Draft Day 1
A college catcher and high school shortstop were selected by the Red Sox on day one of the MLB Draft. Here's what to know.

BOSTON, MA — The Boston Red Sox made two picks on day one of the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft, spreading their chips evenly on proven college talent and an up and coming high school prospect.
With the 14th overall pick the Red Sox grabbed University of Virginia catcher Kyle Teel.
Teel — who also played in the Cape Cod Baseball League — is coming off a storied college career at Virginia. He was the first Cavalier to be named a first-team All-American by six baseball publications, was the winner of the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award and Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year.

Teel finished in the top-10 in UVA career stats in five categories, according to the program. He is seventh in home runs (28), eigth in runs scored (170), ninth in total bases (376), ninth in doubles (48) and 10th in batting average (.343).
Teel was selected after his freshman and sophomore seasons to play on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team over the summer.

With the 50th overall pick, the Red Sox went to the prep ranks to select Nazzan Zanetello, a shortstop from Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis. If Zanetello doesn't sign with the Red Sox, he is committed to the University of Arkansas.
Zanetello checks all the boxes for high school accolades. He was a member of the USA Baseball program and played in the Perfect Game All American Classic in 2022.
According to an MLB.com scouting report, Zanetello is a more recent riser than some notable high school prospects. Notably, he led Team USA in hitting (.429) at an 18-and-under World Cup qualifying tournament in November.
