BOSTON – The Small Business Administration (SBA) has named Bright Beginners Family Daycare the 2023 Homebased Business of the Year for Massachusetts.

Owner Dora Aguilar earned the recognition for her over 30 years of experience as an educator. Originally from Guatemala, Aguilar became a certified teacher and taught for over 9 years in her native country.

After arriving in Boston in 1994, Aguilar learned English and worked in a Head Start program in Jamaica Plain. After running into issues with her first son, it motivated Aguilar to become an entrepreneur and provide quality, affordable childcare by starting Bright Beginners Daycare in 2001.

“Small businesses such as Bright Beginners Family Daycare are vitally important for underserved communities,” said District Director Robert Nelson. “Shining a light on this industry and the need for quality care, I hope we can all have a greater appreciation for the important work they provide. “

Bright Beginners Daycare uses a bilingual Spanish curriculum to inspire the acceptance of cultural diversity, with a small cohort never exceeding 10 children in the program. Customers are served in regions including Avon, Boston, Canton, Dedham, Milton, Quincy, Sharon, Norwood, Holbrook, Weymouth, Braintree, Randolph, and Stoughton.

“Honestly, I feel humbled and blessed to be the recipient of the Home-Based Business of the Year. I am proud of this accomplishment that my business has achieved,” said Owner Dora Aguilar. “Knowing my worth – among the lives of the families I have served across the commonwealth keeps me motivated to continue providing the best care for my clients.”

In 2019, Aguilar moved from Hyde Park to Randolph to offer her families a better quality of care to enhance the safety, health and educational atmosphere for the children. Aguilar’s square footage increased from 900 to 2,000 sq. ft., where a new outdoor park was built, and the 2 car garage was converted into an indoor playroom measuring 24 x 24 feet. Aguilar currently employs 2 full-time and 1 part-time staff.

Aguilar will be honored at the annual SCORE Boston Celebrates Small Business Success Featuring the Massachusetts SBA 2023 Small Business Awards on Wednesday, May 10th, 2023, at the Sheraton Hotel, Needham, MA.
