BOSTON — Red Sox icon David Ortiz this week made a huge stride in his recovery from being shot in the back in his native Dominican Republic. The former slugger's condition was upgraded to "good," his wife said in a statement Tuesday. The Red Sox icon remained in the Intensive Care Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, where made progress nine days after the shooting.

ESPN reported Ortiz has started eating "soft foods" and has been in touch with former teammates over the phone.

Tiffany Ortiz thanked people for the "many expressions of love" her family has received in the wake of what authorities called an assassination attempt on one of the Dominican's most beloved sports stars.
