Investing in Accessibility at the Harry Parker Boathouse

BOSTON, MA [March 21, 2022]—Community Rowing, Inc. (CRI) will install automatic doors and enhance accessibility at three key points in the Harry Parker Boathouse: from the main lobby to the boat bay, into the weight room, and into the administrative suite. This investment in accessibility is thanks to a generous grant awarded by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

“Community Rowing invites individuals of all backgrounds, abilities and experience to grow through rowing,” said Ted Benford, Executive Director of CRI. “We are grateful to the Reeve Foundation for its grant, which will help us advance our mission. The addition of three more automatic doors in high traffic areas of our boathouse will make a significant positive impact on the communities we serve.”

Rowing is a highly adaptive sport. With the right equipment and expertise, nearly anyone can get on a rowing ergometer or out on the water to experience the sport of rowing. The increased level of accessibility provided by these three automatic doors will ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be a part of a supportive team environment, improve physical fitness and strength, and build confidence, resilience, and self-esteem.

The Chistopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is one of the country’s leading foundations that supports those living with paralysis through programs, research, and facilities access. The foundation has additionally supported CRI’s para and military rowing programs with previous grants.

As one of the largest rowing programs in North America, Community Rowing is committed to making its opportunities available to all. The boathouse has programs for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Its Para & Adaptive Rowing offers a broad range of programs for people with disabilities, from recreational and therapeutic to elite competition.
