MA Schools, Districts Report 286 New Coronavirus Cases

MASSACHUSETTS — New coronavirus cases were reported at 122 Massachusetts school districts among staff and students from Oct. 22 to Oct. 28, up from 98 districts the week before, according to new district-by-district coronavirus data released by the state Thursday. Ten approved special education schools and two educational collaboratives also reported cases.

The state reported 286 total new cases, up 42 percent from the 202 cases reported last week. There were 201 student cases and 85 staff cases.

Only in-person and hybrid students and staff with building access are counted toward district numbers. The state estimated that there are 525,000 people in those two categories.

Ten school districts reported five or more cases: Abington, Methuen, Waltham, Holliston, Agawam, Braintree, Rockland, Beverly, Haverhill and New Bedford. New Bedford and Haverhill had the most cases, with nine each, and both reported a mix of student and staff cases.

Fifty-eight districts reported just one case and 278 reported none at all. Twenty-three educational collaboratives and 92 special education schools reported zero cases.
