Meb Keflezighi Caps Final Boston Marathon With Heartfelt Tribute
The 2014 marathon winner stopped at the finish line to recognize the family of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old boy killed in the bombings.
BOSTON, MA – Monday marked the end of an era for Meb Keflezighi. The elite runner and 2014 Boston Marathon winner ran his final 26.2 miles, capping a storied career during which he inspired an entire city a year after it experienced its worst tragedy. But after crossing the finish line, Keflezighi had one more thing left to do.
Keflezighi, who finished in 2 hours, 17 minutes and 1 second, ran over and kissed the family members of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old boy killed in the 2013 marathon bombings.
Keflezighi told CBS Boston seeing Martin on the news was "personal" to him as the father to an 8-year-old daughter. He became good friends with the Richard family in the aftermath of the attacks. He wore Martin's name, as well as those of Lingzi Lu, Krystle Campbell and Sean Collier, on his bib when he won in 2014.
