BOSTON, MA — The salaries of elected officials in Massachusetts will grow in 2023 — with some getting raises as much as 20 percent.

The increases follow a 2017 law that gives raises every two years to top elected officials, including the governor, Secretary of the Commonwealth and attorney general, and legislative leaders like Senate President Karen Spilka and Speaker of the House Ron Mariano.

State law sets the base salary for top elected officials — for the governor it's $185,000 — but also includes a biennial adjustment to "reflect the aggregate quarterly change in salaries and wages in the commonwealth for the most recent 8 quarters as determined by the Bureau of Economic Analysis in the United States Department of Commerce." The governor also gets a $65,000 housing stipend.

The House speaker and Senate president each get $80,000 on top of their base salary, according to state law — and get biennial adjustments based on changes in state median income.

The Boston Globe calculated the increases of various new salaries for the state's top elected officials. Healey is set to make about $37,000 more than Gov. Charlie Baker in 2023, for example.
