Let’s take a trip to the North Shore with this month’s Collection Spotlight - an 1887 Bird’s-Eye view map of Magnolia, a small coastal village in Gloucester. From the mid-1800s and into the 1900s Magnolia was a vacation destination for Bostonians and those from farther afield in New England and New York. It was home to elegant resorts like the Oceanside Hotel and The Hesperus, as well as private oceanside estates. Some of these buildings are identified in the legend included in the bottom right of the map. Though our version is missing some of the text, the Boston Public Library’s Leventhal Map Center has a copy with the full legend.
And in addition to buildings, there are always a lot of fun details to see in bird’s-eye view maps, like different modes of transportation and people engaged in various activities. Take a closer look at life in Magnolia by checking out its record in DSpace and read more in our BLOG post!
