New Italian Eatery Opens In Cambridge With Secret Speakeasy Below

CAMBRIDGE, MA — A brand-new dining concept is set to debut in the heart of Kendall Square this week.

Alice & Monarch will officially open at 238 Main St. on Friday. The new dining experience will feature Alice, which is a modern Italian-Mediterranean taverna upstairs, and Monarch, a hidden dessert speakeasy and cocktail lounge downstairs.

The concept, which is located next to the recently opened Eastern Edge Food Hall, was developed by the team behind Source, a modern gastropub and pizza bar on Church Street in Cambridge.

Alice's menu will feature handmade pastas, seasonal vegetables, and a selection of salumi (meats) and formaggi (cheeses). The upstairs eatery will offer a capacity of 110 seats.

“Alice is deeply personal to me,” said Owner Daniel Roughan. “It’s named for my great-grandmother, and everything about it — from the warmth of the space to the menu — is meant to feel like coming home. Monarch is where we let our creativity stretch a bit further. It’s more playful, more intimate, and gives us a chance to surprise people.”

Downstairs, Monarch will showcase desserts and fun cocktails. The Space has a capacity of 85 diners across the bar, lounge and private room. The dessert program will include new takes on affogato, baked Alaska and more.

Alice will be open daily — 11 a.m. to 1o p.m. Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Monarch will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.
