Sumner Tunnel Closure Continues This Weekend
This is just one of 36 weekend closures of the Sumner Tunnel during a restoration project.

BOSTON, MA — One in an ongoing series of Sumner Tunnel closures takes place this weekend, leaving drivers without the link between East Boston and downtown Boston.
MassDOT is in the midst of a long restoration of the southbound tunnel. There will be 36 weekend closures all told by the end of the project. The tunnel closes each weekend at 11 p.m. Friday and reopens by 5 a.m. Monday, creating a detour for Logan-bound travelers.
"After nearly a century of service, the Sumner Tunnel will undergo a restoration starting in 2022 that will impact commuters, travelers, and people in the surrounding communities," MassDOT says.

But that's just a taste of a bigger disruption coming in 2023: MassDOT will close the Sumner Tunnel between May and September entirely.
The Ted Williams Tunnel at the end of I-90 and the northbound side of Route 1A, the Callahan Tunnel, will be open as detours.
