UPDATE: Teen Charged in Fatal Stabbing of Another Teen

BOSTON, MA - A 16-year-old boy has been charged in the Sunday murder of a 15-year-old boy in Dorchester.

The victim, Deon Hopkins of Dorchester, was found at approximately 4:30 p.m. near the corner of Columbia Rd. and Devon St., police said. He was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he died of a stab wound to the chest.

A suspect, 16-year-old Amari Pope of Dorchester, was arrested and arraigned on a murder charge Monday afternoon in Dorchester Muicipal Court , Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

Prosecutors said Hopkins and a teenage girl were involved in a verbal altercation, which Pope was also present at. Pope went to his house and returned with a kitchen knife.

Pope then allegedly attacked Hopkins and followed him to the area of a nearby market, where Hopkins collapsed. Prosecutors say surveillance video shows Pope circling Hopkins after he collapsed.

“The evidence gathered since Sunday afternoon suggests this was a verbal altercation that didn’t have to escalate to violence,” Conley said. “It’s made all the more tragic by the fact that the victim was just five weeks shy of his 16th birthday.”

Prosecutors said Pope returned home and made statements suggesting the incident to a family member. Those statements were then relayed to police.

Police initially said the incident was a shooting. The DA’s office said a witness mistakenly reported it as a shooting.

A man was fatally shot in a firefight with police around the same location last week.

CORRECTION: The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office initially reported the victim as a 16-year-old.
