Bites Nearby: Loco's

Braintree resident whips up burritos and more at local shop.

With a tagline of “out of your mind burritos,” Loco’s in South Braintree Square promises only the best burritos with the freshest ingredients. A recent visit revealed they certainly deliver on their promises.

Braintree resident Bob Muccini, a former customer and CFO for a high-tech company, bought Loco’s from its original owners five years ago and hasn’t looked back since.

Every burrito ($6.85) that crosses the counter is custom-made. Hand-rolled in a white or wheat tortilla, customers can choose between chicken, steak, pork, or ground beef, or they can skip the meat altogether for a strictly vegetarian meal. Then select your fillings, which include cheese, white or brown rice, Loco’s own salsa, lettuce, and sour cream. For those who like their burritos with a little kick, add Loco’s hot sauce and jalapeno’s. If you're counting calories, skip the carbs and eat your burrito as a salad. When you remove the dairy products altogether your burrito will weigh in at less than 500 calories.

Other items include soft tacos (with your choice of meat), quesadillas, chili, and a mini-burrito which includes meat, cheese, rice, beans, and salsa for $4.95. I tried the Chicken Tortilla Soup and was pleased with the rich creamy broth, which included chunks of white chicken, corn, and plenty of spices which gave it just the right amount of punch. Add a soft taco for $2.50 and you have yourself a nice little lunch for around $6.

When you visit, make sure you have some cash in your wallet as Loco’s does not accept credit cards.
