BRAINTREE, MA — Town officials have canceled the Braintree Day Fourth of July Celebration. The 47th annual celebration, originally scheduled for June 27, will not happen because of the new coronavirus pandemic.

"Although we are unable to honor America’s birthday with a parade and fireworks, we can still celebrate all that we love about Braintree and our great nation,"Mayor Charles Kokoros said. “Our community will persevere through its strength and resilience, embodying that of our founding fathers, during these most challenging times."

Braintree Day committee officials said they are thankful for the generous support it has received from numerous local businesses and residents who have helped make this event possible. Without them, Braintree Day would not exist. As many of these businesses are now facing financial challenges themselves, the committee created a way to still support them.

The committee said it will purchase $1,000 worth of gift cards from local businesses to be distributed as prizes during future committee-sponsored events. Keep any eye on the committee’s website at braintrees4th.org and social media pages @braintrees4th for information on upcoming events, which will allow for safe participation and social distancing by all who attend.

“This was an extremely difficult decision for the committee, but given the ongoing health and safety concerns associated with COVID-19, we felt it was necessary to cancel this year’s events,” said Fourth of July committee chair Sean Powers said.

Powers said the committee is also extremely grateful for the support that it has received from the town, including assistance from the Braintree police and fire departments, our DPW crews, BELD, and the Town Hall staff.

The second annual 5k to Braintree Day Road Race, scheduled for June 21, was also been canceled. Race registrations for 2020 will be honored for the 2021 race.
