Braintree Police Collect Pounds Of Medication For Take Back Day

National Drug Take Back Day is a partnership between the DEA and local police to limit the amount of prescription drugs on the street.

BRAINTREE, MA — Police in Braintree announced that 375 pounds of prescription drugs were collected Saturday as part of National Drug Take Back Day.

National Drug Take Back Day is a partnership between the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and local police forces to limit the amount of prescription drugs on the street, by allowing people to take their unneeded prescriptions to the police station for proper disposal.

A photo was shared on the Braintree Police Department's Facebook page and shows 12 cardboard boxes filled with prescription medications that can be given to the DEA to be destroyed.

National Drug Take Back Day is not the only day unwanted prescription drugs are taken, police said.

"Thank you everyone who came by today as part of the DEA’s National Drug Take Back Day, and remember our drop box is available 24/7 to collect your unused medication," the department said in a statement on Facebook.

Police stations nationwide were a part of this year's take back day. According to the DEA's website, over a million pounds of drugs were collected on 2017's National Drug Take back Day.
