Braintree Police Creating Camera Registry
Police say the registry is designed to help officers with criminal investigations.

BRAINTREE, MA — The Braintree Police Department is hoping a new program will give officers access to cameras and surveillance footage related to a case.
The department recently announced that they have started a voluntary security camera registration program mean to help officers during an investigation. On the Braintree Police NextDoor page, Officer Peter Gillis wrote that during criminal investigations, officers often have to canvas neighborhoods for camera footage and knowing where the cameras are can potentially speed up a case.
"Many times the best available video evidence is not of the crime scene itself, but of pathways and streets leading into and out of the crime scene. Video cameras are increasingly being used in both residential and commercial properties to prevent crime and to memorialize events as they occur. As such, video evidence has become extremely helpful in solving crimes, identifying perpetrators, and serves as valuable evidence in court," Gillis wrote.

Participants in the program can opt-out at any time and registering only notifies police of the location of the camera. Braintree Police will not have access or control to any registered cameras.
