Brockton Man Pleads Guilty To Hitting Braintree Officer With Car
Anthony Bynum was sentenced to prison for hitting a Braintree officer with his car but could avoid prison if he complies with probation.
BRAINTREE, MA — A Brockton man has pleaded guilty to hitting a Braintree police officer with his car, and he could avoid jail time, according to the Patriot Ledger. Anthony Bynum, 19, was convicted in Norfolk Superior Court of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, negligent driving and leaving the scene of a crash causing injury.
Bynum received a two-and-a-half-year sentence with two years suspended. This means he could avoid prison if he complies with the terms of his probation, which require him to remain alcohol-free, drive only with a valid license and either attend school or maintain a job.
On Jan. 16, Bynum was acting as the getaway driver for two teens trying to shoplift at the South Shore Plaza, police said. Police said the teens were spotted at Bynum's car. An officer in front of the car tried to keep the group from leaving, but police said Bynum accelerated and struck the officer. The officer was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

While driving in the wrong lane, police said the suspects collided with an SUV head-on. The SUV had two occupants, a 50-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman, both from Quincy.
