Family Moves on From Braintree Ice Cream Shop

The Sweeterie has moved in where SummerSun Ice Cream and Coffee was on Washington Street in Braintree.

For the Cabanero family, it was a short but sweet experience running SummerSun Ice Cream and Coffee, formerly located in the heart of South Braintree Square at 915 Washington St.

In August, the family put the business up for sale and closed its doors after only a brief summer stint.

"It was sad to have to close up the shop but everything worked out OK," store manager Jennifer Cabanero said.

Jennifer's husband got a computer job transfer to New Jersey, where the family will soon be moving and starting a new life. The store also was purchased in August by an ice cream shop in Norwood.

On the former company's upbeat website, the Cabaneros bid farewell to their customers after having had the pleasure and opportunity to serve the community.

"We've enjoyed meeting you all and seeing your smiles as you enjoyed ice cream and other things in the store," the notice said.

The family purchased the ice cream shop, formerly Sweet Indulgence, and planned for a long and successful stay in Braintree. That was until another opportunity knocked in New Jersey, Jennifer Cabanero said.

"We had a very good summer. It was our very first year doing business. But it always takes a while to build up a business," she said.

Before she took the reigns as shop manager, Cabanero worked at the library at the Boston Athenaeum. After being laid off, she did temporary work for an archival project sponsored by the Boston Public Library system. She left that assignment in April to work full-time at Summer Sun Ice Cream and Coffee.

At the end of August, Cabanero said the family sold the business to The Sweeterie, which was looking to open a second store.

The Sweeterie is best known for its wide array of ice cream with flavors like Cake Batter and Mocha Chip, Almond Joy, and Dulce de Lech. The store also sells baked goods and smoothies.

During its brief summer run, Summer Sun Ice Cream and Coffee, "where the ice cream is tasty, the people are friendly and the place is comfy," took pride in offering the very best coffee and Richardson's Ice Cream.

Socially conscious, the company's website also hosted a lost-and-found section for customers and even featured a news section and family photos.
