First Recreational Pot Shop Could Come To South Shore

This proposal marks one of the first realistic chances for the South Shore to get a recreational marijuana store.

ABINGTON, MA — A Braintree company is proposing what could become the first recreational marijuana store on the South Shore. Green Harbor Dispensary has submitted a proposal to Abington town officials to potentially open a retail facility at 1410 Bedford St., on Route 18, near the Weymouth town line, the Brockton Enterprise reported.

Green Harbor's proposal is the first Abington has received, and given that most neighboring South Shore towns like Braintree and Whitman have banned recreational marijuana stores from coming to town, this proposal marks one of the first realistic chances for the South Shore to get a retail facility. Currently, the closest shops to the South Shore are in Wareham and Brookline. Brockton has also approved zoning for 8 recreational marijuana businesses.

Nic Patel, Green Harbor's manager said the owner of the building is open to leasing the space to a marijuana business, and it's already zoned for commercial use. The company said the marijuana would likely be grown at their Middleboro growing facility and be sold at the store in Abington. Town manager Richard LaFond told the Enterprise he has requested more information about Green Harbor's background and a plan to keep traffic from becoming an issue on Route 18. If all checks out, the town will begin working on a community host agreement in June.
