Highlands Playground Receives Wheelchair Accessible Glider from Braintree Commission

The new playground is located in front of the former county hospital on South Street and is the largest such facility constructed in town.

The , which officially opened to public on Nov. 5, 2011, had a new piece of equipment recently installed.

The Braintree Commission on Disabilities (C.O.D.) donated the new Little Tikes Commercial ® Rock’N Ship Glider to add a wheelchair accessible play area. The gentle swaying motion glider allows ample room for wheelchairs and other children to play simultaneously together.

The Braintree Commission on Disabilities believes that all playgrounds should be accessible to everyone regardless of ones abilities either the child or guardian accompanying them may have.

The members of the Commission met with the playground’s vendor Bill O’Neill, from Northeast Playground Builders, to discuss the playground design, equipment, and accessibility. Several discussions and meetings were held to determine the best use of the available planned space within the confinements of the commission’s budgetary restraints. Currently, the C.O.D. is researching funding options to install a shade system for the glider.

The new playground is located in front of the former county hospital on South Street and is the largest such facility constructed in town. Since the opening, the playground has been utilized daily by numerous children in Braintree and other surrounding communities.
