New Deli and Convenience Store Opens on Union Street

A restauranteur and longtime Braintree property owner has opened a deli and convenience store on Union Street near the rotary.

Boston Food Shop & Deli opened on Friday, March 15 at the former AT&T wireless store at 120 Union St. It offers fresh sandwiches, salads and soups along with convenience store staples like snacks, soft drinks and newspapers.

The owner, Mohamad Iskandar, is a Newton resident who has owned property in Braintree for 20 years. He is leasing the space from F.X. Messina.

Iskandar also runs a restaurant in Allston called Boston Kabob Company. He opened his new store – what could be the first in a chain, Iskandar said – on Union Street in part because of the high traffic in the area.

"I thought that it would be a good idea," he said.
