BRAINTREE, MA — Voter turnout during early voting before the Massachusetts presidential primary was dissapointing in Braintree, according to Town Clerk Jim Casey. Still he expects voter turnout on Super Tuesday to be around 50 percent.

Braintree had about 1,731 residents cast an early ballot, which is 6.5 percent of the town's registered voters. Casey said he was expecting around 3,000 voters.

"I was a little saddened for the low turnout," Casey told Patch. "I thought there would have been more with the presidential primary ... In Braintree, there was a lot of signage up ... The secretary of the state did a good job getting the word out for early voting."

In November 2016, 9.3 percent of Braintree registered voters cast a ballot, though Casey said this was definitely higher because it was a general election. In the 2018 senate race, 4.4 percent voted early. Although, voting was still higher than it was for 2018, Casey was still shocked there wasn't even more last week.

"Given the media attention, this should have been much higher," Casey said.
