South Shore Plaza Reveals Area's First S.T.E.A.M. Play Area

From South Shore Plaza: Simon, a global leader in premier shopping, dining and entertainment destinations opened the first S.T.E.A.M. children’s play area, PLAY, at South Shore Plaza. The new children’s S.T.E.A.M. Play Area is sponsored by Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center. S.T.E.A.M. is designed to inspire imagination in a fun, welcoming and engaging environment while incorporating the principles of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).

“We are thrilled that South Shore Plaza now offers the first S.T.E.A.M. PLAY area on the South Shore, allowing local children to take advantage of the fun and engaging environment that is not just for children, but for parents and families to enjoy together,” said Rick Tonzi, General Manager, South Shore Plaza. “The new play area will provide hours of entertainment with new play equipment and amenities that offers a unique experience while interacting in the core principles of S.T.E.A.M. We know that families will take advantage of PLAY each time they visit.”

The children’s play area, PLAY, is sponsored by Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center. PLAY provides an interactive area for children and their families, with strong visual themes for educational entertainment and elements that incorporate S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). Simon’s design firm, Agency 808, worked closely with educators to create engaging and informative stations that match the national and state level benchmarks that testing systems are based on.

The core elements of PLAY include:

• All interactives incorporate the principles of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).

• SCIENCE: D.N.A. Ladder (the way we look, think, act and play are all controlled by our D.N.A.).

• TECHNOLOGY: Techno Tunes dance floor (utilizing technology to create music).

• ENGINEERING: Wonder Wall (gears and levers allow children to work together to move a ball through the maze).

• ART: My Art Gallery (touch screen to control colors, patterns, shades and formations).

• MATH: Tile Table (against a backlit tabletop, children can arrange a wide variety of geometric magnetic shapes in order to build their own creations)

• S.T.E.A.M. Jr. area includes small climbing areas and other interactive elements including sensory engagements for little steamers.

• The 2,000-square ft. PLAY area features soft seating and additional padded flooring to allow for parents and guardians to stay close to their young children.
