Beanstock Festival brings awareness for Substance Use Disorder
When Robin Houston-Bean told me the story about her son, I had to hold back the tears. Nick Bean, her middle child had lost his battle with substance abuse at 20 years old. As she explained how smart, funny and compassionate Nick was, it seemed unbelievable this could happen. But yes, substance abuse can happen to anyone.
To help her cope, Robyn began attending support groups but were not local to Braintree. She felt there was a need to start a local support group where people could connect with others who have lost someone from substance abuse.
The Sun Will Rise Foundation was named after Nick's wonderful words, "Please be happy. The Sun will Rise".

In its third year, Robyn and her family have organized the Beanstock Music Festival that was held on Saturday, July 14 at French's Common, a day before Nick's 25th Birthday. It was a day celebrating recovery; connecting with knowledgable organizations and support groups, playing games, drawing and painting, enjoying great bands, making and meeting new friends, and concluding with a Vigil for all that have passed because of Substance Abuse.
It was an honor to meet Robyn and the wonderful people at the Festival who offered valuable resources for those who have been affected by addiction. And for those who shared their stories, their strength and determination to beat their addiction is something to celebrate.
