Town Council Backs East Middle School Feasibility Study

BRAINTREE, MA — The feasibility study for the East Middle School renovation can now move forward.

Tuesday, the town council voted to provide funding, which is needed to advance the process with the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

In a letter to the council, Mayor Joseph Sullivan says that the $286,974 appropriation is needed to cover the cost of the architectural plans that need to be filed and submitted to the MSBA. The town is expecting the state agency to cover about 58 percent of the overall cost of the project.

The project calls for the renovation of the school along with the construction of an addition to accommodate fifth grade students. Sullivan said the move would open up about 22 classrooms at the elementary schools. At a School Committee meeting last month, Sullivan said the preliminary cost of the project is $69 million before the reimbursement.

Monday, Superintendent Frank Hackett said the process was in between the feasibility study and schematic design phase.
