BROOKLINE, MA — The Brookline Housing Authority has officially opened what is being called the town's largest affordable housing development in more than 50 years, according to a report from Brookline.News.
The new development, known as 32 Marion Apartments on 32 Marion St., includes 115 affordable housing units for seniors and people with disabilities in the Coolidge Corner neighborhood. The project replaces 60 aging public housing units and nearly doubles the number of affordable apartments previously available on the site. Housing officials say the development is the largest addition of affordable housing in Brookline since the 1970s.
The six-story building was designed to help residents age in place and includes community gathering spaces, a fitness room, library, on-site services and other amenities. All 115 apartments are supported by project-based Section 8 assistance, helping ensure affordability for residents with limited incomes. Twenty percent of the units are reserved for very low-income households. The all-electric building was also designed with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind.
The project was made possible through a combination of federal and state housing tax credits, local funding, loans and nearly $40 million in tax-exempt bond financing. Brookline Housing Authority officials said the development represents a major step in preserving and expanding affordable housing opportunities in one of the Greater Boston area's most expensive housing markets while allowing seniors and residents with disabilities to remain in the community.
Brookline Housing Authority Executive Director Michael Alrpin and other local officials joined residents and project partners to celebrate the opening.
