BROOKLINE, MA — There are plenty of places to pick up a fresh loaf, but bread lovers may want to make a stop at this Brookline bakery that recently received some national recognition.
Clear Flour Bread at 178 Thorndike St. was named the best bread bakery in Massachusetts by Fast Food Club as part of its ranking of the top bread bakery in every U.S. state. The publication highlighted the bakery's European-style breads, traditional baking techniques and longtime reputation among customers.
The family-owned bakery opened in 1982 and specializes in handcrafted breads and pastries inspired by the baking traditions of France, Italy and Germany. According to the bakery, its breads are made with simple ingredients, naturally fermented doughs and locally milled flours before being baked in a stone hearth oven. In addition to artisan loaves, Clear Flour Bread offers croissants, Danish pastries, brioche, cookies, cakes and a rotating selection of seasonal specialties.
Fast Food Club highlighted Clear Flour Bread's pain de campagne and ciabatta while describing the neighborhood shop as a destination for authentic European-style bread. The publication noted the bakery has built a loyal following over more than four decades and continues to draw customers from throughout Greater Boston.
The nationwide ranking selected one bread bakery from each state. Fast Food Club said it considered factors including product quality, consistency, craftsmanship, customer reputation, and each bakery's role in its local community when compiling the list.
