Brookline Police To Join Summer Eats Kickoff Event
Summer Eats aims to help young people have access to healthy food when school cafeterias are closed.
BROOKLINE, MA — The police department will join the Public Schools of Brookline Food Services Department on Tuesday, June 30, for the Summer Eats Kickoff Event at the Lynch Recreation Center on 599 Brookline Ave., helping launch another summer of free meals for local children and teens.
The event is scheduled to take place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Organizers say nutritious meals will be available throughout the summer for all children and teenagers age 18 and younger while school is out of session.
The kickoff marks the start of Brookline's annual participation in Summer Eats, a federally funded nutrition program that provides free meals to children and teens during the summer months. The program is administered locally through the Public Schools of Brookline Food Services Department and has been offered at the Brookline Avenue site for several years.

Health and education experts have long pointed to the importance of proper nutrition during the summer months. Consistent access to healthy meals supports physical development, helps children remain active, and can reduce the effects of summer learning loss before students return to classrooms in the fall.
The event will also allow residents to interact with Brookline police officers and community partners while learning more about local resources available to families during the summer season.
Nutritious meals, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other foods that meet federal nutrition standards, will be available free of charge to eligible youth during the summer. Brookline officials hope the program will continue to provide a reliable source of healthy meals while helping children stay nourished, active, and prepared for the upcoming school year.
