Brookline Police Release 2016 Mid-Year Report

Here's a look at crime statistics, arrests, citizen complaints and use of force incidents in the first half of 2016.

BROOKLINE, MA – The Brookline Police Department has released its mid-year review for 2016.

According to the report, violent crimes remained the same, with 84 reported in the first half of both 2015 and 2016. Reports of property crimes, such as burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft, dropped by 33 percent compared to the first half of last year.

One rape has been reported in Brookline this year, up from zero at this time last year. Reported assaults also increased by 1 percent - 79 this year and 78 in 2015. However, robberies dipped from last year, with this year's four marking a 33 percent drop from last year's six. Zero murders were reported in either year, as the town has not had a homicide since 2007.

On the property crimes front, burglaries increased 20 percent from last year, but larceny is down 26 percent and motor vehicle theft dropped 67 percent.

During the first half of this year, police in Brookline arrested 242 people, down 26 percent from the 330 arrests made during the same time last year.

Citizen complaints dropped from 6 last year to 5 this year, though use of force incidents are up from 14 to 15, marking a 7 percent increase.
