Brookline's Dr. Asa Sevelius Honored At LGBTQ Gala

BROOKLINE, MA - From OUT MetroWest: Local non-profit organization OUT MetroWest honored Dr. Asa Sevelius, principal of Brookline’s Heath School, at this year’s Come Out & Celebrate event. Sevelius is an accomplished educator who came to prominence in June 2017, upon becoming the nation’s second out transgender school leader. Representative Jack Patrick Lewis chaired the event’s honorary committee. The evening gala took place at the Hilton Boston/Dedham on Saturday, September 23.

The dinner event featured remarks from Sevelius, Lewis, and OUT MetroWest youth participants, alumni, and families. In addition to a raffle for theater, sports, dining, and luxury prizes, the event included a live auction for a trip to Provincetown. Proceeds benefited OUT MetroWest’s programs for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth. The event raised nearly $100,000 to support these programs, thanks in part to sponsorships from organizations such as Dell, Justice Resource Institute, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals.

“Come Out & Celebrate provides a chance to reflect upon the strength, resilience, and spirit of the LGBTQ
community,” states OUT MetroWest board chair Donna Tambascio. “Honoring Dr. Sevelius was a natural
choice. One of OUT MetroWest’s goals is to connect LGBTQ youth with adult mentors, and we couldn’t ask for
a better role model than Dr. Sevelius.”

OUT MetroWest runs four programs for LGBTQ middle and high school youth, totaling more than a dozen
meetings each month. Meetings are educational, social, and supportive and are held in Framingham, Newton,
and Wellesley. The organization also provides workshops in the community to enhance understanding of
gender identity and sexual orientation, as well as events for LGBTQ parents and their families.
