Chestnut Hill's Joshua D. Safer, M.D. is honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society

Waltham – March 13 – Chestnut Hill resident Joshua D. Safer, M.D., Medical Director of the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Boston Medical Center, has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society as the 2017 recipient of the society’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Health Award, an honor recognizing an individual who has made outstanding contributions to LGBT health. He will receive the award at the Society’s LGBT Networking Event scheduled for October 26.

In nominating him for the award, his colleagues noted Dr. Safer’s work in “bridging the gap between perception and scientific evidence of the biological basis of gender identity and the safety of treatment and his leadership in creating a new generation of physicians who are not afraid to treat transgender patients.”

Board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism, Dr. Safer is also an Associate Professor of Medicine and Molecular Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, a position he has held since 2006.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Safer is a widely respected national and international lecturer and author on the subjects of endocrinology and transgender health. He serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical & Translational Endocrinology and a member of the editorial boards of Transgender Health, International Journal of Transgenderism, and Endocrine Practice.

He is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and serves as a member of its Global Education Initiative Task Force, its Writing Committee on Standards of Care for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender Nonconforming People, and Co-Chair of the Scientific Committee for its 2018 International Meeting.

Dr. Safer received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine.

Dr. Safer has been previously honored with the Outstanding Service Award from the Association of Programs Directors in Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Boston University School of Medicine Outstanding Student Mentor Award, and the Abbott Thyroid Research Advisory Council Award.
