Lisa Fredman, PhD., Boston University Professor of Epidemiology, discusses her study on the health effects of caregiving in older women.  Dr. Fredman studied a group of over 1,000 participants between 1999 and 2009 comparing characteristics of women who continued caregiving, stopped caregiving, and started caregiving during that time period.  Her finding that caregivers were indeed more stressed than their non-caregiver counterparts but had lower rates of mortality led her to propose the "healthy caregiver" hypothesis.  Her current research examines the health effects of caregiving combined with psychological factors, such as resilience and personal gain from caregiving, as well as the role of biomarkers, such as cortisol and inflammatory markers.
