Owner Of Well-Known Italian Medford Sub Shop Dies At 85

The man owned and operated the business on Main Street for 40 years.

MEDFORD, MA — Robert J. "Bob" DiGiorgio, the longtime owner of Bob's Italian Foods on 324 Main St., died late last month at the age of 85.

DiGiorgio was born in Medford to the late Rocco and Giovanna "Nina" (Trodella) DiGiorgio. He spent many years living in North Reading, Maine, and Florida but remained closely connected to the city where he was born and where his family business became a local institution.

For more than 40 years, DiGiorgio served as an owner of Bob's Italian Foods, the family-run market and deli on Main Street in Medford. Founded by his parents, the deli-style business has been a fixture in the community for generations and is known throughout Greater Boston for its Italian specialties, prepared foods, large sub sandwiches, and catering.

In addition to running the business, DiGiorgio served on the board of Depositors Trust Company in Lexington and sponsored local youth enrichment programs.

He was known for his devotion to family, pride in his business, and his ability to connect with people. According to the obituary, Bob DiGiorgio had a congenial personality and contagious laughter.

DiGiorgio is survived by his wife, Edie; his sons, Robert DiGiorgio and his husband Andrew Alexander, and Michael DiGiorgio and his wife Jessica; his daughter, Carla Baker and her husband John; and his grandchildren, Amelia, Madeline and Charlotte. He is also survived by his brother, Ronald DiGiorgio, and his wife Diane, along with many other family members and friends.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, June 3 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the McLaughlin-Dello Russo Family Funeral Home on 60 Pleasant St. in Woburn. The funeral mass will take place the next day at 10 a.m. at Medford's St. Raphael Church on 516 High St.
