Rembetika music originated in the hashish dens of Piraeus and Thessaloniki around the turn of the 20th century and was influenced by oriental elements that came with the forced immigration of two million Greek refugees from Asia Minor. It gave way to Greek Popular Music - Laika' in Greek - which used the same instruments in similar ways during the early 1950s.
The old Athenian music called Elafra (easy listening) is the music that expressed the middle and upper urban class of Greece and gets its primary influence from the West in contrast to the Rebetika songs that look towards the East. In the concert we will cover the musical period from 1870s to the late 1950s. This music was sung at the musical theaters, the dancing clubs of Athens and were sung everywhere in Greece. It included chorus songs called kandades, which originated from the western Greek Islands like Cephalonia and piano songs such as those written by Attik, Sougioul and Sakelarios. Some of the most famous singers include Nikos Gounaris, Tony Maroudas, Nini Zaha and Stella Greka.
