Joan Miró i Ferra (1893-1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona to a goldsmith and watchmaker. His surrealist works, with their subject matter drawn from the realm of memory and imaginative fantasy, are considered some of the most original of the 20th century. In the beginning of his career, Mir— experimented with different painting styles that were fashionable at the turn of the century like Fauvism and Cubism. After visiting Paris in 1920, he became associated with the Surrealist movement. Miro's works, based on fantasy, dreams, myths, and the subconscious, are characterized by juxtapositions of freely flowing lines and brightly colored abstract forms. Join us as we discuss the life and art of this influential and creative 20th century artist by viewing his varied and playful paintings, lithographs, sculptures, ceramics, and tapestries.
