On Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m., the Brookline Chamber of Commerce will host its first ever “cash mob” in conjunction with National Cash Mob Day. Loosely based on the idea of a “flash mob”, where participants show up and perform a “spontaneous” choreographed performance, a “Cash Mob” is intended to gather a group of people via social media to shop in one store at a designated time which will bring a spontaneous influx of cash to the store. “Mobbers” are requested to spend an amount of $20. The Chamber has chosen to create a hybrid event whereby they are encouraging people, in advance, to shop in the St. Mary’s business district, which lost revenues during necessary construction improvements in 2011.
“It’s an easy and fun way to support your community,” says Harry Robinson, Executive Director of the Brookline Chamber of Commerce. “It’s grass roots marketing at its best. It’s a chance to make a big difference with a little bit of cash. As part of the Cash Mob, your purchases help create a small spike in sales for these locally owned businesses.”
There is something for everyone in the St. Mary’s business district. Located on Beacon Street between the intersections of St. Mary’s Street and Carlton Street, this area includes a number of restaurants and stores, from boutique stores like Kolgian Oriental Rug Gallery to Johnnie’s Fresh Market, Economy Hardware, Beacon Soap Opera Laundry, O’Learys’ Pub, Busy Bee Diner, Japonaise Bakery and Tatte’s Fine Cookies & Cakes. The area was first developed for business over 100 years ago and has been praised by the Brookline Preservation Commission as combining “entrepreneurship, consolidation, technological development, political acumen, City Beautiful and landscaping aesthetics as well as architectural harmony.”

So come on out, Saturday, March 24th, 3:00 – 5:30p.m. and show your support by being part of the mob. Stop by the Chamber’s table in front of the Beacon St. Tavern to receive a “cash mob” sticker, which will identify you as a fellow “mobber”.
