Brookline, Mass. - Heather Hamilton, a Brookline Town Meeting Member (TMM), has announced her candidacy for a seat on the Brookline Board of Selectmen.

“As Brookline continues to face numerous challenges, including the continued increase of Chapter 40B development proposals, the growth in student enrollment and ninth K-8 school project, and the questions around our community’s approach to diversity and inclusion, we need progressive thinkers to make informed, goal-based decisions,” said Hamilton. “I look forward to being a voice for addressing those challenges and preserving Brookline as a great place to live, work, shop, and raise a family.”

Hamilton has a deep background in public policy and administration. She currently works for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation overseeing vehicle fleet maintenance. Prior to joining MassDOT, she served as a Special Assistant for Amtrak, worked at the Department of Justice and for the Federal Aviation Administration.

As Brookline addresses its development challenges and school project, Hamilton hopes to use her extensive budget creation, management, leadership experience to work with the community to maintain Brookline’s economic and school growth.

“To help Brookline grow, we need to use an inclusive, community-based process to assess our needs, set achievable goals, gather facts and make consensus-based decisions,” Hamilton said.

A TMM from Precinct 3, the Longwood Avenue resident has served as the President of the Town Meeting Members Association and Co-chair of the Town Meeting Green Caucus. In 2015, Hamilton served as Deputy Field Manager for the “Yes for Brookline Campaign.”

With Brookline facing tough challenges on how to create and maintain an inclusive community, Hamilton believes there are still many steps to take to address those challenges.

“To foster a productive dialogue, we must first acknowledge and admit our implicit biases,” Hamilton said. “We can use those steps as building blocks for having an honest discussion, which can help make Brookline a more inclusive community that celebrates the differences, skills, and values its residents and employees bring to it.”
