Hit And Run Of Cyclist In JP: State Police Charge Brookline Man

State Police are charging a 27-year-old man with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a collision causing injury.

BROOKLINE, MA — A Brookline man is expected to appear for arraignment Wednesday in West Roxbury Municipal Court. Mass State Police say on Aug. 6 his car collided with a bicyclist in a rotary at Centre Street and the Arborway in Jamaica Plain.

The complaint charges Jonathan Costa, 27 with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a collision causing injury.

A driver on the road at the same time captured dash cam footage showing a red car driving up to the rotary on the J-way where Centre Street and Arborway meet. A cyclist already in the rotary on the right-hand side of the rotary attempts to make its way through the circle. The footage shows the red car put on the brakes but give no indication it was turning, cutting from the left lane across to take the second exit out of the rotary, right in front of a cyclist in the process.

Without apparent time to break, the cyclist crashes into the car and lands on the road and sits up looking dazed. The driver of the car with the dash cam stops and calls out of his window to see if the biker is OK. The red car keeps going, dodging another car.

Police released the footage in a call for help identifying the possible driver at the time.
