Local Artists To Represent Brookline in Battle of the Arts

According to organizers, Battle of the Arts will give Brookline artists a chance to engage with community and create art.

Brookline's creativity will be put to the test in a few weeks, as local artists are invited to participate in the first-ever Battle of the Arts, a friendly competition sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and organized by the Brookline Arts Center in collaboration with art centers in Hyde Park and Roslindale.

The event, to be held in Martini Shell Park on August 7, 2010 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., will allow the community to witness the artistic process, rather than just the final product.

"We want to give people the chance to meet an artist rather than just see their work," said Susan Navarre, director of the Brookline Arts Center.

Navarre said she expects Brookline to be well-represented in the contest, and hopes the event will be a way for artists to connect with each other and with the community.

"It's a nice way for artists to get out and meet each other over their work," she said.

The Battle of the Arts will also feature children's activities including chalk art, stamp printing, group mural sketching workshops, natural dying and bead making, and there will be music by the Dorchester Saxophone Quartet.

The event coincides with the re-opening of Hyde Park's 5-acre Martini Hatch Shell Park, which was recently renovated and now features basketball courts, nature paths and a wading pool.

Cheryl Murphy, president of the Hyde Part Art Association Board of Directors, is one of the event's organizers.

"I'm a great believer in everyone can make art," Murphy said. She said she hopes many local art students as well as art teachers will participate.

"I really wanted it to be for anyone who thinks this would be a fun way to do their art," Murphy said.

Participating in the contest is free, and artists 16 years or older should contact the Hyde Park Art Association for an application. Prizes will be awarded after visitors vote for their favorite pieces.
