New Club Sees New Heights At Newbury College

Newbury College's Physical Aptitude Club tried a new event and was surprised by the results.

Newbury College’s Physical Aptitude Club sponsored the most attended event so far this year with a trip to Rock Spot Climbing on Sunday, January 28.

Thirteen people attended the event including the club’s executives and an administrator of the college, who said the event was the most successful of all new clubs this year.

PAC Vice President Nhuelle Le said the idea came to her when she went rock climbing with her girlfriend and John Mayo, director of residence life, in the beginning of January. Le thought the activity would be a great workout and a good time off campus for students, so she brought the idea to sponsor the trip to the other PAC executives.

“No one has ever done anything like a trip rock climbing before, so we thought it would be fun to try something new,” said Brittney Freeman, PAC president.

Le and Freeman acted as recruiters, putting up flyers and getting the word out to students. Students of all kinds: athletes, non-athletes, people of all skill levels and physical ability levels, and a few with a fear of heights went on the trip.

“People really wanted to be a part of it,” Mayo said, “I don’t think we left with a single person not happy they went.”

The PAC executives expect to sponsor another rock climbing trip in March. They believe it might become a traditional event. A trip to Sky Zone, a trampoline park in the Boston area, is also in the works for the club, according to organizers.

“We are a growing club. We’re getting the juices flowing and imagination going. There’s more to come,” said Freeman.

PAC is one of five clubs that were started this school year. Newbury now has 24 active clubs and organizations on campus.
