Newbury College Hosted Winter Open House Event

The admissions office invites prospective students to campus.

The admissions office at Newbury College held a winter open house event on campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, February 23 to showcase the school to prospective students.

The event included three 45-minute sessions: a campus tour, a mock class, and a resource fair. The college served lunch to conclude the event.

Kirstin Trouville, a prospective student who attended the open house, found the event gave her a better idea of what Newbury is about.

“The campus tour was my favorite. It was smaller than I thought,” Trouville said, “and my tour guide was really nice and funny.”

Of the 135 students who signed up, 69 students actually attended according to Samantha Varao, assistant director of admissions operations.

The show rate for the event was approximately 51 percent, which is the college’s average for admissions events according to Alexander Petrie, associate director of admissions.

“Ideally we want 70 percent. We’re working our way up,” Petrie said.

Student representatives of the school, known as Admissions Ambassadors, guided the campus tours and interacted with prospective students, sharing their own stories about their college experience. Admissions Ambassador Madeline Jaquith thought that was the best part of working the open house.

“Students and families saw how much we love Newbury and our job, and that’s what we try to do everyday,” Jaquith said.

The admissions office’s goal was to make the winter open house run better than the fall open house that was held in November, a goal they succeeded in reaching. The winter event was more organized and better staffed, according to Varao.

“We were able to change things that went wrong in the Fall. I think we made out weather-wise and with having additional staff,” Varao said.

The next admissions event is Accepted Students Day on April 8.
