Newbury College To Redo Athletic Facilities; How Players React

Newbury College and Hellenic College partnered up to redo all their athletic facilities over this summer, remodeling everything completely.

Newbury’s school colors are green and gold, so one of the main issues many student athletes had was the fact that the gym color is maroon. Both schools agreed that the new floor, walls and bleachers will be made neutral colors with splashes of each college’s colors to make it fair and upgrade the look.

Taylor Kelley, a junior women’s basketball player at Newbury College is eager for a new gym for her senior year. Kelley is also an interior design major who is helping both athletic directors with the new floor layout. Newbury College Athletic Director Jonathan Harper chose her to help with this project.

“As an athlete I am so excited. This gym needed to be remolded years ago and I am just happy I get to have a say in the whole thing” she said.

In past years, the Newbury soccer, baseball/softball and lacrosse teams have had to travel miles away at Medford High School just to practice because the college didn’t have a home field. Recently, Newbury has been working with Hellenic College to rip up their old grass behind they gym and turn it into a collegiate level soccer, baseball/softball and lacrosse field.

“It’s about time” said Meghan Irving, a current Newbury lacrosse player.

“ Athletics is a big part of this school, so I’m just happy the school realized that and is giving players what they deserve” Irving said.

Senior Destiny Spears has been a major influence through Newbury sports through her 4 years. She has been apart of the tennis team, cross country, track and field and basketball.

“Although I wish I could play in the new gym, it's about time for Newbury to redo this for the athletes” said Spears.
