Nice Shot: Dick’s Sporting Goods Discontinues Sales of Rifles
Dick's Sporting Goods has discontinued selling assault rifles at their stores after the events of the Parkland school shooting.
Last Wednesday, Dick’s Sporting Goods announced that they would stop selling assault style rifles in their stores, because of the semi-automatic function causing their high rates of fire and they were usually sold with high capacity magazines. They had also increased the age where one person can buy a firearm, to 21 years old.
Overall, Brookline residents and students think Dick’s Sporting Goods decision was a very good call, but think that it's just the beginning.
“It’s a nice thought, but more needs to be done. Gun control works well in other countries,” said Eugene, who was passing by the “D” line at Cleveland Circle.

Newbury college students, also agreed with what Dick’s had done.
“The discontinuation of assault style rifles at Dick's Sporting Goods was a very good step in the right direction to reduce the ability for one to acquire a high fire rate rifle. Dick's is one of the few sporting goods stores to still consider hunting as a mainstream enough sport to still have a wholesale market of weapons, Dicks being the forefront of this market they have set a president for each company to follow suit (which they will as Dick's stock went up 1% following the announcement), “ said Andrew Moynihan in an email.”
