Surge of Stolen Bikes Plagues Brookline

Police say twice as many bikes have been stolen in the first three months of this year than during that same time period last year.

BROOKLINE, MA - Police are cautioning residents to be wary of where they leave their bikes after a spate of bike thefts in the town this year.

Since January 12 bicycles have been stolen, with eight reported in March alone, police said. During the first three months of 2015, the number of reported thefts was six.

Bikes have been stolen on Mason Terrace, Jordan Road, Netherlands Road, Beaconsfield Road, Gerry Road, and Westbourne Terrace.

According to police, most of the thefts have been of locked bikes, and half were snatched from front porches. With nice weather approaching, police anticipate a rise in bike thefts in April based on trends from previous years. They are urging residents to remain vigilant and to try and keep bikes out of sight as much as possible.

Some other helpful tips for protecting your bike include:

- Using a U-Lock rather than a cable lock because it’s harder to cut
- Always locking your bike through the frame and a wheel
- Always locking to bike racks wherever possible
- Writing down your bike’s serial number and taking a photo of the bike. If it gets stolen, it will be easier to identify.
