Write Now @ Wheelock accepting registrations for camp Aug. 1-12
Successful students of all ages must develop strong critical reading and writing skills to achieve academic and professional success. The U.S. Department of Education has identified explicit instruction in writing techniques and sustained writing practice as essential to the development of these foundational skills. This summer, Wheelock College will address this need by expanding its programming with Write Now @ Wheelock, a creative writing camp for rising eighth, ninth, and 10th graders.
The camp will run Aug. 1-12, 2016. Students will attend Monday through Friday, and have both one week and two week camp options. Each week will contain programming which allows campers to actively engage with traditional and digital texts from various genres - including poetry, fiction, essays, and plays.
Write Now @ Wheelock offers campers the opportunity to build and expand their reading and writing skills. Components include creative writing classes and interactive workshops taught by Wheelock College faculty; group discussions led by local writers and publishers; and field trips to literary sites in the City of Boston, such as Boston Public Library, The Boston Globe, and Longfellow House.
Campers will read and write about math, science, art, history, the natural world, their environment, and their personal lives. They will also reflect on the effect writing - especially creative writing - has on their local, national, and global communities. They will collaborate with their peers to create visual literary forms like collage, erasure and graphic novels, and experiment with literary crafts such as bookmaking and paper circuitry. Campers will also explore a variety of writing media and techniques in a supportive and stimulating environment which encourages them to express themselves and share their ideas with others.
Co-Directors Jenne Powers and Gillian Devereux believe Write Now @ Wheelock is the ideal place for young adults to build confidence and become skillful academic and personal writers. The study and practice of creative writing helps students develop wider vocabularies, advanced critical thinking skills, and stronger writing practices. It also empowers them to document their own experiences with the world and share those experiences with their communities.
Write Now @ Wheelock welcomes the readers and writers of the future. For more information and to register for Write Now @ Wheelock please visit wheelock.edu/writingcamp.
